If you’ve participated in the vast cultural landscape of New York City, you’ve likely borne witness to the legacy of the Philip & Janice Levin Foundation. From the whimsical playscapes of Central Park to the striking views of the High Line; the storied stages of the Public Theater Delacorte and Lincoln Center all the way to the emblem that is the Statue of Liberty, the Foundation’s impact touches countless corners of the city.
Since its inception in 1963, the Philip & Janice Levin Foundation has stood in support of a multi-faceted mission: fostering excellence in the arts, championing education, and ensuring access to physical and mental healthcare for all. As the Foundation’s support of the city’s beloved green spaces and venerable arts organizations promotes wellness of mind and spirit, our mission also extends to the world-class medical institutions working tirelessly to improve and sustain the health of all New Yorkers.
While a map of New York City could be thoroughly peppered with pins pointing to the spaces where the Foundation has had an impact, our work extends beyond the five boroughs, and far beyond the United States.

Featured Initiatives
The Foundation’s ever-growing community of nearly 300 grantees features some of the country’s most esteemed institutions of higher learning (Harvard, Stanford, Juilliard, the University of Georgia, and the Levins’ beloved Rutgers University) and global organizations combatting society’s most pressing physical and mental health concerns.
While many of the Foundation’s grantees work in support of our global society, there is simultaneous priority placed on wellbeing at a more local level, championing neighborhood-based organizations in a position to best serve those in their immediate vicinity.
To date, core tenets of the Foundation’s work have included:
-
If there’s an artform you love, the Foundation is likely to have supported it, with grantees creating innovative and impactful work in theatre, orchestral performance, opera, ballet, visual art, film, and more. We are proud to support some of the country’s most historic artistic institutions, while also empowering newer organizations who lead the way with boundary-breaking creativity.
The impact of Foundation grants is seen in the work and programming of the country’s leading visual arts institutions, including the Met, the Frick Collection, and the Whitney here in New York City. We are also proud that the Foundation’s legacy appears tangibly on the walls of these cherished spaces, by way of works from luminaries like Degas, Pissarro, and Monet which were donated directly from the Levin Family collection. -
Since its inception, the Foundation has considered support for the arts and sciences as two parts of a whole. We are proud to fund medical research organizations leading the way to combat society’s most urgent health concerns; while also uplifting arts and culture organizations whose work notably improves society’s empathy, resilience, and general wellbeing.
-
While the Foundation’s work began close to home through the philanthropy of two native New Yorkers, our mission has continued to expand in reach. Across the United States, we are proud to count organizations ranging in size and focus among our grantees. The Foundation’s work also looks towards global need: funding medical research in Africa, cultural and humanitarian initiatives in Israel, and efforts worldwide to expand healthcare access and respond to natural disaster.
-
The impact of the Levin Foundation is seen through ongoing support to our community of grantees – but also in the spirit of giving it has helped inspire in others. Philip & Janice Levin found constant joy in introducing favorite local organizations to their family and circle of treasured friends. To lead by example in fostering generosity amongst their peers and loved ones was one of the Levins’ greatest points of pride. This is a legacy their family is proud and humbled to continue today, in serving as stewards for the Foundation’s ongoing initiatives.
-
Over six decades, we are proud that the Foundation continues to champion the institutions that meant the most to our founders, Philip & Janice Levin, while also supporting emerging organizations and society’s evolving concerns. At present, this has meant grants issued in support of the timeliest of global conversations including humanitarian aid, pressing climate considerations, and maintaining the integrity of the educational experience across the United States.
-
The Levin Foundation is proud to champion those who dedicate their lives to serving and protecting the American people. Among our community of grantees, you’ll find organizations that support law enforcement professionals, active or veteran military service members, and the families whose lives are impacted by their sacrifices. We aim to empower those who have given so much for our safety and freedom, providing financial assistance to pursue education and advance their careers.

The Philip & Janice Levin Foundation primarily works through long-term partnerships with organizations whose missions align with our focus areas.
While we typically initiate most of our grant relationships, we occasionally consider proposals from new organizations. Each potential grant is carefully evaluated.
